TL;DR
Local SEO is one of the easiest ways for therapists to get more inquiries because most clients search locally before choosing a therapist. Your Google Business Profile is as important as your website, yet most therapists barely use it.
- Most therapy searches are local: “therapist near me”
- An optimized Google Business Profile increases visibility
- Adding services, keywords, and updates improves rank
- Reviews build trust faster than any website claim
Local SEO determines whether people in your area can actually find you online. If you want more therapy clients without wasting money on ads, this is where to focus first. According to Google, 76 percent of people who search for a local service end up contacting a business within 24 hours, and 28 percent result in a purchase or booking (source: https://www.thinkwithgoogle.com).
According to Google, 76% of people who search for a local service end up contacting a business within 24 hours, and 28% result in a purchase or booking.
Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the key to ranking in the Map Pack, the box of three local businesses that shows up before normal search results. If you are not in that box, you are invisible to most people searching in your area.
Here is how to optimize your profile step by step.
Claim and verify your listing
Go to https://google.com/business and claim your practice. Verify it by mail or phone. Do not skip verification or your profile will never rank.
Use your real business name
Do not add keyword stuffing like “John Davis, LMFT – Anxiety Therapy Seattle.” Google penalizes this and may suspend your listing. Keep it clean and professional.
Choose the right categories
Primary category: Psychotherapist, Counselor, or Psychologist
Additional categories: Mental Health Clinic, Family Counselor, Trauma Therapist, etc.
Add your services
List your services individually. Instead of “Therapy,” add services like Couples Therapy, EMDR, Trauma Therapy, Anxiety Treatment, ADHD Coaching. Add descriptions using natural language and local keywords.
Write a clear bio and business description
Use up to 750 characters. Describe who you help and include local references naturally. Example: I provide therapy in Shoreline for adults dealing with anxiety, burnout, and stress. Sessions are available online for clients in Washington State.
Enable messaging and booking
Turn on messaging so people can reach you quickly. Add a consultation booking link from your website to reduce friction.
Your Google Business Profile is often the first impression someone has of you, sometimes before they even visit your website. Do not treat it like a directory listing. Treat it like a marketing asset.
